DIY Beer Lager

Samuel Adams Boston Lager 1
It’s Friday and I want to brew a beer. This is a brew I intend to have ready to drink by the time the Super Bowl rolls around. I’m feeling a little bullish about my Seattle Seahawks but even if they don’t make it I think this beer will be a good one that appeals to a lot of people.
My plan is to utilize the lower temperatures in my storage facility and make a true lager. Currently the temperature in my storage facility is between 10 and 13 C. This beer may sound a bit familiar. I’m trying to make a brew that is similar to Samuel Adams Boston Lager.
Ingredients

  • 1 can (1.7 kg) Coopers Original Series Lager
  • 1 can (1.5 kg) Coopers Unhopped Light Malt Extract
  • 1 oz Hallertau Hops
  • 4 oz. 20 L Crystal Malt
  • 1 sachet Saflager yeast
Made to 20 liters.

STEP 1: MIX
Bring 2 liters of water to boiling. Turn heat to simmer and add the crystal malt, let steep for 15 minutes. Remove the Crystal Malt muslin bag. Bring water back to boil. Turn heat to simmer and add the hops. Simmer for a further 10 minutes then strain into the Fermenting Vessel. Mix in the beer kit and Light  Malt. Add cool water to the 20 liter mark and stir vigorously. Add the yeast and fit the lid.

STEP 2: BREW
Try to ferment as close to 10°C – 13°C  (50°F – 55.4°F) as possible.
